I need to get a picture of it soon, but he can actually stand when he's holding onto something (like a coffee table). He's a little confused by it, but he's catching on quick. I just can't believe how strong he is and how quickly he catches onto things.
One of the ladies in daycare told me a funny story this morning. The other day the air conditioning broke in their room. I guess it got pretty warm in there for a little bit, so he kept rolling off of the rug until he could get to the tile around the outside of the room and laying flat on his belly with his head to the side. How smart is my baby?! He does that at home, too, but I never realized that it was to cool off. Hmmmm...maybe he's even smarter than me...
I really confused him last night since I was changing his diaper in the other room when his beer commercial came on. It was his favorite one - with the Jamaican music playing. He just started flapping around and looking for the tv. I hurried to catch the end of it for him...so I did the best I could. [sigh....] The things you have to do as a parent that you NEVER planned on.

Hot...
Man, it's so friggin hot today. 96 with a heat index of 103. And it feels every bit of it. It looks like another dip in the pool tonight is in order. He loved it last night. And I loved it because Andy took him and I got a chance to actually make and eat dinner for a change. He loves his baby boat. He just floats around, oblivious to all of us...in his own little world. But he must like it, or else I'd be getting fussed at "da-da-da-da-da-da". It's his word for everything. And believe me, the TONE is what's important. He can say it so sweet...and he can really yell at you with it.
I almost got him to eat a french fry the other day. He was trying to suck on it for a half hour. I suppose that would be his first real solid food, knowing him. This is the kid who's obsessed with beer commercials!

Good weekend....
Although a little hot. But we had fun with his new game, which is me stacking up blocks and him knocking them down with lightning speed. It seems he never gets tired of it! Other than that...not much news. I don't think that tooth is coming through after all...at least I can't see it anymore.
The other night just before bed he was playing with my necklace, and for some reason I must have made a face and he started laughing. Gosh, we must have laughed for 20 minutes. We were both cracking each other up...he was laughing so hard he couldn't catch his breath. It was just so funny...and all over nothing at all. But it was such a sweet moment. And it must have tuckered him out, because he went to sleep after that without so much as a peep. It's amazing the little moments that just come out of nowhere, and then you wouldn't trade them for the world.

I hope child services can't pop you for this one, but it seems my baby is hooked on "Red Stripe" beer commercials. They play them a lot on ESPN, which Andy always has on. And they all have this Jamaican guy on them. I don't know what it is about these commercials...but as soon as they come on, Brent immediately drops his toys and turns around to watch them. He doesn't take his eyes from the tv for one second...his mouth is open, tongue hanging out. It's so hilarious! And as soon as it is over, he goes back to playing. I think it's because one commercial has a snazzy little tune that they play, and maybe he just started liking that and now reacts to the guy's voice. I don't know...but he sure is crazy about those commercials. Other than those, he ignores the tv, which is a good thing. I thought it was a coincidence at first, but he's been doing it all week. Crazy baby!

Sharing :)
I walked into daycare yesterday and Brent looked up and handed me a toy! It was just too adorable. I thought it was a fluke, so I handed it back. But he passed it back and forth to me a few times. I tried it again at home and everytime I asked for his toy, he would hand it to me. One time I asked when he wasn't holding anything, and he just slapped my hand. Too funny!
This morning I walked in to find him sleeping on his belly on top of the blanket. That's a major accomplishment! The last few days every time he rolled over onto his belly, he couldn't fall back asleep that way. But I'm going to have to dress him warmer at night, I think. He just won't keep his covers on anymore, even on the cooler nights.

Success!
Well, the trip went better than I had hoped! He really is such a good boy!
We left shortly after he woke up. He took a bottle on the way and we played for a bit before he settled into a long nap for the rest of the trip (over an hour!). It makes for a boring trip for Andy and I, since you can't listen to music too loud and you run out of things to talk about. He did well down at my Dad's too. Ate all his food, played really cute and took a nice two hour nap in the playpen. It was great! He didn't seem too impressed by the chickens, but he liked Luca (their lab-mix). She was licking his hand and he just shrieked with laughter!
The way home was a bit more stressful. He was just too awake and wanted to be playing and moving around, not strapped into a seat for 2 hours. But we made it through...although I give Andy the most credit for listening to me sing and dance and try to keep him entertained. By the end of the trip, if I even tried to hand him one of his toys that he was so bored with, he would just throw it at me angrily.
Of course he slept good last night, though! It was nice and cool and we were all worn out pretty well.

Another week...
Well, another week is almost gone. Brent is a full 8 1/2 months old now. We'll see what the weekend holds for us, I suppose. I'm going to try to visit my Dad on Sunday. It's a two hour trip (one-way) and I'm not sure how it's going to go. He refuses to take an even-slightly-lukewarm bottle. Room-temperature doesn't cut it - even in the 90 degree weather, I've found. So I picked up one of these bottle warmers that work off of your cigarette lighter in your car. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that it works, and works well. The good thing is that we'll be going in the truck, so I can be right beside him and feed him as we drive if he needs to eat. I don't think I'll attempt jar food on this trip. I can't imagine Andy will like cleaning sweet potatoes from the windshield, back of the seat, back window, etc.
So hopefully it will work out! I want to see how it goes, in case we have an opportunity to visit Andy's parents soon. If I can work out the bugs on a 2 hour trip, it will help to see what I will need for a 7+ hour trip. So I'm excited! It will be a challenge...but I think he'll do fine.
Other than that, should be a slow weekend. Maybe I'll get him in the pool for a little swim. I'd like to have him outside more, but right now the horseflies and other little biting flies (mayflies?) are swarming. It's impossible to be outside and not fighting their relentless pursuit of blood. Andy and I have been cussing them all week as we've worked on the deck. But maybe by the fall we can find a way to screen in the front porch, and then I can rest a little easier taking Brent outside.

Just stopped by
Just went to see him at daycare. He's having a good day. He doesn't want to sleep much...there's too much to see and do these days! But he actually ate all his lunch (macaroni and cheese). Evidently that is his favorite of all the jar foods.
They were saying how it is hard to get him to concentrate on eating sometimes because he has to watch what everyone is doing. Whenever someone comes into the room he cranes his head around to see who it is. And lately he wants any bottle in site, whether it is his or not. But even with 6 other babies in there, I have yet to walk in and not see someone interacting with him. He is just so jolly that even the other teachers come in to his classroom to play with him. Though yesterday he did spit carrots in the one lady's eye because he decided to do a big raspberry while he was eating. So maybe his visitors will wane if he keeps that up!

This is my first post! I'd like to keep this us so anyone who is interested in Brent's progress in life can just pop in and read when they have a chance. As much as I'd like to do better, being a mom doesn't leave a lot of time for all the things you like to do - keeping up with pictures, journals, etc. So maybe I can find a little time each day for this.
Right now, the little guy is getting pretty mobile! Even though he's not officially crawling yet, he sure is finding his way around the floor. And if your back is turned, somehow he can enter warp mode. Then when you try to figure out how he did it, he is content to just sit there and stare at you with a blank, innocent look. He is finally comfortable with being on his belly for a few minutes, and I think that is helping out the most with his progress. In fact, he used to only be happy sitting up, and now he loves to be rolling around on the floor instead. I am constantly trying to find the perfect combination of toys that are close enough for him to play with, but not too close that he's rolling over on them and then has to yell for me to get a small uncomfortable object out from under his back.
I'm not sure, but he may be getting another ear infection. He keeps non-chalantly touching his one ear. But he doesn't seem to be uncomfortable, and only has a little bit of a runny nose here and there. I think I will just watch it for a day and see what happens. Now that he can get around a little bit, there is a lot more sharing of toys and interaction at day care, so that may be the reason he is getting another cold again so soon.
All in all, he is a very happy little boy. I am amazed at how often he is smiling and laughing. All Andy has to do is look at him and he starts flapping around and shreiking with laughter. He really is such a good baby now that we have gotten through those first tough months. He goes to bed fairly consistently at 6:30 each night (after a splatter inducing, fun-filled dinner attempt, a quick dip in the pool to cool off, and one last bottle that I have to stand over the crib and hold so that he can fall asleep without 15 minutes of fussing) and is only getting up once or twice until his final waking at 6:30 in the morning. That is the best time of the day, walking in there to find him babbling to his toy bear and playing with his feet. As soon as he notices you watching, he starts flapping his arm like a little bird and smiling that sleepy, perfect smile. Then when you pick him up, you are allowed a little hug and snuggle time before he has to get all independent and start his day. Then he won't allow such snuggling until it's time for bed again.
So...things are good for now. We're still waiting for teeth to come through, and he still refuses to hold his own bottle (while gazing at you as if to say "well, I'm not sure why I need to when you do such a good job already, mom!"), but all in all, everything is on track and he is healthy and happy. What more could I ask for? :)
